Constituents and Contours : Exploring the Foundations of Konkani Literature

To strengthen the background of Goan Literature initiatives related to student development and institutional quality enhancement in the light of NEP 2020, Dr. Glenis Mendonca, Associate Professor, Department of English, along with TYBA students Ms. Sariah Costa and Ms. Ambika Morajkar, attended a One Day Symposium organized by TSKK and Sahitya Akademi on ‘The Fundamental Constituents of Konkani Literature’ at The Thomas Stephen’s Konkani Kendra Auditorium in Porvorim on 27th June 2026.

The event began with a welcome address by Mr. Om P. Nagar, Program Officer, the Regional Office of Sahitya Akademi, Mumbai. In his introductory address, Director of TSKK, Dr. Pandurang Phaldessai, urged the students and symposium invitees to make the best use of the opportunities provided by the TSKK and the Sahitya Akademi to gain new knowledge about the constituents of the Konkani language, which is a part of the Eighth Schedule of our Constitution. This was followed by an informative keynote address by Dr. Kiran J. Budkuley, former head and Professor of the Dept. of English, Goa University, who spanned the various constituents of the Konkani literary canvas, ranging from poetry, prose, and drama, among others. 

In the first session, papers were presented on various topics spanning from spirituality to folklore. Fr. Mousinho de Ataide spoke on Religious Literature, which emphasized the Catholic faith, while Dr. Jayanti Naik presented her paper on Oral Literature and Folk traditions in Goa, in Konkani.

In the post- lunch session, three informative and research- driven papers were presented by illustrious scholars. Dr. Fr. Luis Gomes presented his paper on mythological literature, Mr. Mukesh Thali spoke on Lexicon Literature in Konkani, and Dr. Fr. Victor Ferrao presented an elaborate paper on philosophical literature. The session was chaired by Prof. Manoj Kamat, Principal of Dempo College, Cujira.

The Symposium ended with a valedictory function and the distribution of certificates.
